For sellers
What's my business worth?
Not an appraisal. A first range, so you know where to start the conversation.
First range
$750,000 to $1,000,000
That's 3.0× to 4.0× your EBITDA.
And with vendor financing?
If 30% of a price in the middle of that range ($263,000) is paid to you over 5 years at 5%, the buyer sends you about $4,950 a month, out of the business's profits.
What would move you up the range
- Write down your key tasks and hand one or two off. Buyers pay more for a business that doesn't rest on one person.
- One oversized customer worries lenders. Spreading sales a little before selling reassures everyone.
- A downward trend goes over better with a clear explanation and a plan to turn it around.
- Clean numbers shorten due diligence and make the buyer's bank loan easier.
- Put what's recurring in writing: agreements, loyal customer history. It's value that doesn't always show in the statements.
Starting point: small and medium businesses often sell for three to six times EBITDA, depending on the industry and the market (BDC). Very small businesses can sell below that. Your answers place you within the range. Read BDC's article.
Nothing you enter is saved. For a real price, talk to a chartered business valuator or your accountant.
